It’s not a shock that the queen’s preferred shops or brands are ones that have a long record of unparalleled excellence. The upmarket department store Fortnum & Mason, whose flagship outlet is in Piccadilly Circus, is the oldest enterprise on this list – it was founded in 1707. They specialise in exclusive food and drink such as foie gras, caviar, chocolate and tea. A particular stand-out are their glorious hampers.

Corgi Socks

At first it may seem as if this brand is connected to the monarch’s love of dogs. She has owned several Pembroke Welsh corgis over the years. However, Corgi was launched in 1892, as the name suggests, produces the eponymous items plus tights and stockings.

Floris London

According to Coco Chanel, “No elegance is possible without perfume. It is the unseen, unforgettable, ultimate accessory.” Queen Elizabeth usually plumps for a scent created by family-run-and-owned Floris. Established in 1730, it’s the oldest retailer of fragrances in England, and was given a royal warrant as smooth pointed comb-makers by George IV in 1820.

Cartier

If there’s one individual on the planet for whom it’s essential to keep good time, it has to be the sovereign. Although she is 94, the queen still averages more than 250 official engagements a year. And to ensure she’s on schedule, she often chooses a watch from this prestigious French jeweller. Cartier has been making peerless timepieces (and other goods) for more than a century and a half.

Hunter

In the 1960s Nancy Sinatra sang These Boots Are Made for Walkin’, and there’s no doubt – due to the aforementioned miles she covers – that Queen Elizabeth needs reliable, durable footwear. One item of choice is Hunter’s wellies. This waterproof style icon, which was initially produced in 1956, is handcrafted from 28 separate parts. The queen often sports a flat-heeled black pair, but they come in a plethora of colours.

Fulton Umbrellas

The French call it un parapluie; in the US, bizarrely, it’s occasionally known as a bumbershoot; whereas to Brits, it’s just a brolly. What would we do without the good old-fashioned umbrella? The queen invariably opts for a transparent one made by Fulton, who are the UK’s biggest manufacturer – they turn out four million annually.

It’s well-known that the queen relishes participating in, or otherwise watching, open-air pursuits – clay pigeon shooting, riding or fishing. Britain is especially notorious for its inclement weather, so her trusted jacket for keeping the wind and rain at bay is a waxed-cotton, olive Barbour. Indeed, the Daily Mail reported that the queen has had the same one for 25 years. Barbour, which manufactures numerous other traditional outdoor clothing and footwear, received a royal warrant in 1974.

Waitrose

And so to the million-dollar question: are you likely to see the queen pushing a shopping trolley around Waitrose? Actually, many royals have on occasion been photographed doing just that in this store – the Duchess of Cambridge in the Norfolk branch. Yet with regard to the queen, although Waitrose enjoys her patronage, members of staff pick up her groceries.

Rigby & Peller

A former favourite was luxury lingerie firm Rigby & Peller which supplied the queen and other members of the royal family with their unmentionables. That was until the former owner included details of fittings in a book, which resulted in the shop losing its royal warrant in 2017 after 57 years. Other customers have included Lady Gaga, Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow.
