The half dresser was not to be beaten
WHEN I was first asked to take part in this make-over I thought it would be a great way to spend an morning. After all, the ones I had seen in magazines, whereby a dowdy looking (is that why I was chosen?) female is transformed, looked pretty simple.
The first part of the process, an interview, concentrated on my personality and the type of image my beauty expert wanted me to project. When I went back two days later it began.
It all started with my hair which is stubbornly and consistently straight but this seemed to make it more of a challenge. When I had a silver contraption on my head blowing hot air it dawned on me that the hair dresser was not going to be beaten.
In the meantime other people were hovering around discussing cheekbones, skin colour and eyebrows. While vain people may love this part I found it hugely embarrassing.
It must be remembered that this entire process was being recorded and photographed and I'm incurably camera shy.
The make-up was done by Tina who explained step by step precisely what was being done and gave beauty tips at the same time. What impressed me was the amount of time that was taken over each step.
The matching of skin tone with the foundation was done with meticulous care as was the actual making up.
By this time the silver head gear had come off and attention was directed towards my hair and again immense care was taken to achieve the desired effect. When it was over I was shown clothes that had been chosen for me to wear to get a more mature look.
I can appreciate that no one would go to all this trouble just to let me go home and I knew that the photography, like everything else would be professionally done, but I just didn't want to be photographed.
So once the lights, floor covering and the cameras were ready they tried, they really did try, to make it all seem natural. But if you don't feel comfortable it is a supreme form of torture to pretend that, for half an hour, you are.
When it was over the results were certainly impressive and very different from any other photos I have.
The whole experience was different from anything I have ever done before but I recommend it to anyone who would like a new image.
But I really could have done without the cameras.
